Retargeting
Concept
Advertising shown again, on other properties, only to people who visited your site and left without doing anything.
Why it exists
Of 100 visitors brought in by ads, 97 leave without doing anything. That ratio doesn't change much even on a well-built site. The problem was having no way to reach those 97 again. The only move available next month was buying another 100 strangers.
But those 97 and someone hearing the name for the first time are not at the same distance. A person who opened the pricing page felt the need and checked the price. They deferred a decision; they didn't refuse. And they were being shown the same ad, at the same price, as someone who had never seen the product.
So a way to select only the people who had already visited appeared. Retargeting is advertising whose audience is defined by visit history, and its purpose differs from finding new people.
How it works
Ads go only to people in the visit record. Four steps.
- Install the code that records visits. A few lines placed on your pages is a tracking pixel, and it's what tells the ad platform who viewed which page.
- Build audiences from conditions. Leaving all visitors in one block dilutes the effect, so cut it down to something like "viewed the pricing page, didn't sign up, within the last 30 days." Different conditions get different copy.
- Pick the placements. Display ads as banners and social ads in feeds are the usual ones.
- Cap frequency and duration. Three times a week, thirty days is typical. Without a cap the same person sees the same banner 200 times in a month, and from then on the product name gets remembered alongside the irritation.
Conversion runs two to three times higher than on new-audience advertising. But the pool is already bounded by your visitor count, so doubling the budget doesn't double conversions. Something that brings new people in at the top has to run alongside it.
The constraints have grown too. Browsers block tracking and consent has to be collected first, so fewer people end up in the lists than used to. That's why more teams now serve the same purpose with an email subscriber list instead.
How it sounds at work
"Let's run pricing-page visitors as their own audience."
Narrowing the condition raises the efficiency.
"There's no frequency cap. One person is seeing it more than twenty times."
Over-exposure to the same person is producing the opposite effect.
"Retargeting alone can't grow further. We need upper-funnel ads."
The pool is bounded by the visitor count.
Ravi runs three audiences at Pagedeck: people who viewed pricing, people who reached the sign-up screen and stopped, and people who only read a blog post and left. The first two see a trial invitation; the last group sees another article. Against running one banner across all three, the same budget produced 1.8 times the sign-ups.
Easily confused with
| Term | What the audience is built from | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Custom audience | A customer list you upload | The raw material is contact details you hold, not visit history. It can include customers who never visited the site, and it's less exposed to tracking blocks |
